I Guess It’s Half Timing and the Other Half’s Luck | A Rory Ficlet

Rory sat at the desk in his room watching Michael Buble music videos on YouTube. He had gone to the Hunger Games midnight premiere with Sam the night before  and hadn’t arrived back home until 3:15 AM. He ended up skipping school and sleeping until 4 PM. The clock at the bottom of his computer screen read 11:01 PM. Rory sighed. He was still wide awake.

Rory considered walking down the hall to Liam’s room, but then decided against it. Ever since Rory had come out, Liam had sort of distanced himself from the boy. He left the house whenever Sam came over and only spoke to him when he needed Rory to pass the salt at dinner. The broken friendship made Rory’s heart ache, but he knew that if someone doesn’t except you for you, it won’t work no matter how hard you try.

Rory was about to press the replay button on “Haven’t Met You Yet” when “Hollywood”, his ringtone, began blaring from his cell phone. He cursed under his breath and made a mental note to turn down the volume. He glanced at the caller ID and saw it was an unfamiliar number. An unfamiliar, long distance number.

“Hello?” Rory asked. His heart was pounding. It couldn’t be-

“Rory?” A quiet, child’s voice asked. “It’s Seamus.”

Rory’s eyes teared up. “Hey, buddy.” He said. “How - how are you?” Maybe if he played it off like he didn’t know anything then Seamus would too. Maybe Seamus didn’t even know.

“Why won’t mammy let me talk to you?” Seamus asked. “She won’t even let me use a phone at any of my friends’ houses.  I finally asked the lady at the library to let me use their phone while mammy is reading a book in the grown-up section. She says I can never talk to you again.”

Rory choked down a sob. “Well, Seamus… it’s…complicated.”

“That’s exactly what Daddy said.” the boy on the other end protested. “What happened?”

Rory took a deep breath, a tear trickling down his cheek. “Seamus… you know how usually boys love girls, and girls love boys?”

“Yes.”

“Well… sometimes… boys love boys… and girls love girls.”

The other end stayed quiet.

“Seamus? Are ya there?”

“Yeah,” the boy replied. “I’m confused, though. How… how can boys love boys? That’s weird.”

“I know it’s different, Seamus,” Rory said. “But sometimes people are like that.”

“Do you love boys?” Seamus asked confusedly.

“I like boys and girls,” Rory said, his heart thumping. What if his brother disowned him the way his mother did?

“Really?” Seamus said after a few seconds. “Why?”

“Because,” Rory replied. “God made me that way.”

“Oh,” said Seamus. Rory could practically see the gears turning in the young boy’s head. “Well, okay.”

“Okay?” Rory repeated breathlessly.

“I still love you.”

Rory laughed through his tears. “Aw, I love you too. I love you so much.”

“Why doesn’t mammy like that you love boys and girls?”

“Well,” Rory said, contemplating how to word what he wanted to say. “She says that a boy liking another boy is a sin.”

“But if God made you that way, how could it be a sin?” Seamus asked.

“I…I don’t know, Seamus,” Rory replied. “I really don’t know.”

“Do you have a boyfriend?” Seamus asked, laughing.

“Yes, I do,” Rory chuckled. “Why?”

“Because,” Seamus replied with a giggle. “Love is icky!”

“Someday you’ll love a girl!” Rory taunted. “It won’t be icky then!”

“Yes it will!” Seamus screeched. He heard a librarian shush him in the background. “What’s his name?”

“Sam. Sam Evans.” Rory smiled as the name passed his lips.

“What does he look like?”

“Well,” Rory said, leaning back in his chair. “He’s blonde and strong, and has these huge lips!”

“Really?” Seamus asked.

“Really.”

“Have you kissed yet?”

“Yes,” Rory laughed. “We have.”

“Eeeeeew,” Seamus giggled. “Kissing is gross.”

“You won’t think that forever, lad,” Rory assured his brother.

“Yes I will!” Seamus cried. Then Rory heard his mother’s voice coming from the background of the other end.

“Is that mammy?” Rory asked.

“Yes!” Seamus said. “I have to go!”

“Okay, buddy. Call me soon, okay?”

“I will!” Seamus said. Rory heard a faint “Who are you talking to?” in the background before the line went dead.

Rory put don his phone and smiled at the ceiling. He had finally gotten to talk to Seamus.

And the boy had accepted who he was without a care.

Rory couldn’t wait to tell Sam.

Like A Bird Without Wings | A Rory Ficlet

Rory closed the front door of the Pierce’s home and sighed.

“Hello?” he called, looking around. “Anyone home?”

No answer.

Rory skipped his trip to the kitchen for peanut butter and went straight up to his room. He collapsed onto his bed, his mind going crazy. He reached a hand up to his right eye, which was quickly swelling. Rory knew it must be purple by now. His shoulder was bruised as well - the jocks had shoved him into the lockers extra hard today (and that was before Rick “The Stick” gave him a shiner). Why did he get all of this torment, you ask? It was simple.

Today, Rory had come out.

So had his new boyfriend, Sam Evans, and he was pretty beat up too. But not as much as Rory.

Only a few days ago, Sam had confronted Rory about his sexuality after catching him snogging a freshman under the William McKinley High School bleachers. Rory had told Sam that he was bi. Rory had been crushing on Sam since the day they first met, and when Sam proceeded to admit to Rory that he was gay - and fancied him right back - well, things just fell into place.

  • Rory: Any luck contacting Miss Brittany?
  • Rory: ...also, is your cousin really coming over to "break" me?

There’s hangovers.

In my defense, Santana, I did mention many times I was alone last night. Maybe if you weren’t so busy gettin’ drunk we’d know where Miss Brittany is.

Do you have any idea where she may be?

What the hell did you just say to me? So now you’re saying it’s my fucking fault that we don’t know where Brittany is? You better watch your step before I go over to your house and break you so hard it’ll be the last step you ever make.

I…I’m sorry Miss Santana. I just got a bit upset. It’s not my fault Brittany’s missing. I’m just as concerned as you are.

Texts to Brittany S. Pierce

  • Rory: Miss Brittany, where are ya? Are you alright?
  • Rory: Ya gotta text Santana, Brittany. She's worried about ya.
